KUMAMON around the
world!
It’s a project full of
dream!
In June in 2016, a
young man departed from Japan with “a friend” in his hand.
The young man is
called “Azuki,” who was a regular member of the philosophy café held at the bar
“bamboo” in Kashiwa city near Tokyo. He graduated from university and left for Commonwealth
of Dominica as a member of JICA, a Japanese teacher, and will live there for
two years.
And his friend is a
stuffed doll of “Kumamon,” who is a famous official character of Kumamoto Prefecture
in Japan.
Azuki will pass the
Kumamon on to a person he meets on his way, and the person will do the same to
another……and we hope in this way the Kumamon will finally travel around the
world and come back to Japan again someday!
Who knows how long the
Kumamon will travel before he comes back to Japan? In a year, or five or ten? Or he could be lost on the way and be
found worshiped as an idol at some remain where adventurers like Indiana Jones
explore some hundred or thousand years after, which is another, not bad ending.
By the way, the
Kumamon has special meaning for us. In April this year, a severe earthquake hit
Kumamoto Prefecture. The goal of the rehabilitation has not been found yet, and
people have been making strenuous efforts to recover their peaceful ordinary
life there. But even in such miserable situation, young people are trying to construct
their future with hope in their mind, just like Azuki. We hope that you, who
are handed the Kumamon, and who know about him on this page, will keep in mind
Kumamoto and people straining for recovery there.
